Last year we asked our Mayor of Santa Fe to proclaim the month of October, 2018 as Supporting Domestic Violence Awareness Month. You may want a proclamation for the whole month and tell the Mayor it can be announced on October 5, 2019. From the experience last year we suggest the following:
Here is the text of the Proclamation to give you an idea of what to adapt for your community.
WHEREAS, one in four women in the United States is affected by domestic violence every year and one in three women in New Mexico, thus making Santa Fe County increasingly at risk compared to the whole of the United States; and
WHEREAS,the victims of domestic violence include not only women, but also children and their related family members; and
WHEREAS,nearly twenty people per minute are physically abused by intimate partners in the United States; and
WHEREAS, intimate partner violence accounts for fifteen percent of all violence crime in the United States; and
WHEREAS, domestic victimization is correlated with a higher rate of depression and suicidal behavior; and
WHEREAS, only thirty-four percent of those injured by intimate partners receive medical care for their injuries in the United States; and
WHEREAS,in Santa Fe County, victims of Domestic Violence receive support through organizations such as Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families and the Solace Crisis Treatment Center; and
WHEREAS,the cost of intimate partner violence exceeds $8.3 billion a year, and between twenty-one and sixty percent of victims of intimate partner violence lose their jobs due to reasons stemming from abuse, and victims lose a total of 8 million days of paid work per year; and
WHEREAS,approximately fifty-nine percent of domestic violence incidents in New Mexico are never reported to law enforcement; and
WHEREAS,New Mexico is one of the top ten states in the nation for domestic violence intimate partner deaths; and
WHEREAS,the local nonprofit film company Healing Voices – Personal Stories is devoted to increasing awareness and furthering education regarding the prevention of domestic violence, endeavoring to share stories from a wide socio-economic range as is representative of the New Mexico and Santa Fe County demographic, and presenting film subjects who provide positive role models for any who similarly are victims of abuse.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ALAN M. WEBER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, 2018 AS
“SUPPORTING OMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH”
